Charter broker or operator: who does what

The short answer

An operator owns or manages the aircraft and flies it under its air operator certificate. A charter broker does not fly: it finds the right aircraft among many operators, compares prices, negotiates and organises the trip, and is paid through the price of the charter. A serious broker always names the operator and the aircraft before you pay.

Why use a broker

An operator offers the aircraft it has, where they are. A broker sees many fleets, so it can offer the aircraft that is already near you, the right size, at the right price, and replace it quickly if something changes. For one way trips and peak dates this usually means a lower price and more choice.

How to tell a serious broker

It names the operator and the aircraft type with its year in the offer, and the tail number before the flight. It shows the total price with airport costs. It gives you a written contract and clear cancellation terms. It answers outside office hours, because aviation does.

Questions

What does a private jet charter broker do?+

Finds the right aircraft among many operators, prices and negotiates the trip, organises the ground side and stays with the client until landing.

How do private jet brokers get paid?+

Through a margin included in the charter price. A transparent broker quotes the total and names the operator.

Is it cheaper to book directly with an operator?+

Sometimes, when the operator has the right aircraft in the right place. More often a broker finds a better positioned aircraft, which lowers the price more than its margin.
