What is an empty leg flight?

The short answer

An empty leg is a private jet flight that would otherwise fly with no passengers: the aircraft is going home or to its next client after a one way charter. Operators sell it for 40% to 60% of the full charter price, so London to Nice on a midsize jet drops from €13,000 to as little as €5,200. The catch is that the aircraft sets the date, the time and the direction.

Why empty legs exist

A client books a one way flight from London to Nice. The jet lands in Nice and has to go back to its base in London, or on to Geneva for the next client. That flight happens anyway, with or without passengers. Instead of flying it empty, the operator sells it.

The client who booked the outbound has already paid for the positioning of the aircraft, so the operator can sell the empty leg for a fraction of the normal price and still cover the fuel and the crew.

The catch

The aircraft decides. The date, the departure time and the direction are fixed by the next booking, and the leg can move or disappear if the original client changes plans. An empty leg suits travellers who can adapt by a few hours or a day; it does not suit a meeting that cannot move.

The rest is the same as any charter: the whole aircraft is yours, the same crew, the same operator certificate, the same service on board.

Questions

What does empty leg mean?+

A flight a private jet has to make with no passengers, usually to return to base or reach its next client after a one way charter.

How much cheaper is an empty leg?+

It costs 40% to 60% of the full charter price of the same aircraft on the same route.

Can an empty leg be cancelled?+

Yes. If the client who booked the original flight changes date or route, the empty leg moves or disappears. The desk tells you how firm a leg is before you book.

Is an empty leg less safe or less comfortable?+

No. It is the same aircraft, crew and operator as any charter, and the whole cabin is yours.
