What to know before you fly
Weight matters: the pilot needs the weight of every passenger and every bag, and in summer heat or at altitude the helicopter carries less. Luggage is limited to soft bags; skis and large cases often go by car.
Weather matters more than in a jet. Most private helicopter flights are flown by sight, so low cloud, fog or strong wind can delay or cancel a flight; the operator decides on the day, and a car is the plan B.
What a flight costs
Helicopters are billed per flight hour, like jets, plus landing fees and, when the helicopter has to come from its base, the positioning time.
