Art Basel Miami Beach: the runways fill before the galleries.

The vernissage opens on the afternoon of Thursday, December 4, and the week is decided long before the first plinth is straightened.

Summary

  • The fair runs December 5 to 7, 2025, but the week that matters begins with the vernissage on Thursday afternoon, December 4.
  • 283 galleries from 43 countries, with Meridians presenting 19 monumental projects under the title The Shape of Time.
  • Miami International's General Aviation Center runs 24 hours; Opa-locka and Fort Lauderdale Executive absorb the pressure of Thursday arrivals and Sunday departures.
  • The Michelin starred tables and the Faena dining rooms are the first things to fill, well before the ramps do.

Three forty in the afternoon on Thursday, December 4. The West Lobby of the Miami Beach Convention Center smells of cold air and fresh crating foam. A gallerist in grey tailoring kneels to move a plinth two centimetres to the left, stands back, looks, and moves it back again. Past the Meridians hall a crew is still unspooling cable beneath a work the size of a freight container. Outside, the cars sit three deep on Convention Center Drive and the valets have stopped pretending to be surprised. Inside, for one more hour, the fair belongs to the people who built it.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2025 runs Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 7 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, preceded by the invitation only vernissage on the afternoon of Thursday, December 4. A private jet to Art Basel Miami is best routed into Miami International (MIA), whose General Aviation Center operates 24 hours a day, year round, with Miami Opa-locka Executive (OPF) and Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) taking the overflow when the ramps fill. Teterboro to Miami is about 2 h 35 of block time in a Challenger 350, estimated at €23,500 to €29,800 one way, per aircraft, Atljet market data, October 2026.

When is Art Basel Miami Beach 2025, and what happens each day?

Art Basel Miami Beach 2025 opens with an invitation only vernissage on the afternoon of Thursday, December 4, then runs publicly from Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 7 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This edition gathers 283 galleries from 43 countries and territories across Galleries, Meridians, Nova, Survey, Kabinett, Positions and the new sector, Zero 10, according to the Art Basel Miami Beach 2025 essential guide. The rhythm of the week has not changed in years. Thursday decides, Friday confirms, the weekend performs.

Thursday is the only day that is genuinely scarce. The important works move in the first ninety minutes, often by message rather than by conversation, and a dealer who has held something for you since Basel in June will expect you to appear in person. Arrive on Wednesday if you can. Those who land at two in the afternoon on Thursday and go straight from the ramp to the hall spend the vernissage recovering rather than looking, which is an expensive way to see a fair.

Friday belongs to the second conversations: the pieces you circled on Thursday, now seen in better light and with fewer shoulders in the way. Saturday is the social peak, when the fair becomes a city in itself and the Design District openings run until late. Sunday is the day the week quietly recommends to people who actually want to look. The halls breathe, the gallerists are candid, and a conversation that was impossible on Thursday becomes entirely possible by the afternoon.

Meridians is where to begin, not where to end. The 2025 edition is titled The Shape of Time, curated by Yasmil Raymond, with 19 large scale projects including works by Bettina Pousttchi, Holly Herndon and Matt Dryhurst, Kennedy Yanko and Jesús Rafael Soto. Monumental work needs distance and empty floor, both of which exist only early. Walk it before the vernissage crowd arrives, or on Sunday morning, and the sector reads as an exhibition rather than a backdrop for photographs.

Begin here, not at the end.

Thursday decides the week. Everything after it is confirmation.

Where do collectors stay during Art Basel Miami Beach?

Stay inside the fair's gravity, which during Art Basel week means Mid Beach and the Faena district. The advantage is not glamour, it is geometry: you can leave the Convention Center at seven, change, and be at a table by eight thirty without crossing a causeway. Faena Hotel Miami Beach anchors that stretch, with Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann, Pao by Paul Qui, El Secreto Omakase and Tree of Life inside the building, plus the Saxony Bar and the Faena Theater for the hours that follow.

Surfside and Bal Harbour are the alternative for people who want the fair without the noise of it. The distance north is real but the evenings are calmer, the beach at seven in the morning is empty, and The Surf Club Restaurant is in the neighbourhood. On the mainland, the Design District and Edgewater suit those whose week is built around gallery dinners and studio visits rather than the Convention Center floor. Coconut Grove, further south and shaded, is where the people on their fifth Art Basel tend to sleep.

Houses are the other way to do the week, and the only way to host it. The large staffed properties on the Venetian Islands and along North Bay Road, the ones with a dock, a cook and enough wall to hang what you bought on Thursday, are committed many months in advance; by October most of what remains is what nobody wanted. If a private villa during Art Basel week is the plan, treat the booking with the same seriousness as the aircraft, and settle both in the same conversation.

A house with a dock changes the week.

What to wear to Art Basel Miami Beach

Dress for a cold building and a warm street, in that order. The halls run heavily air conditioned and the distances inside them are longer than they look, so the daytime uniform of the week is light tailoring or linen, a shirt rather than a t-shirt, and shoes you can stand in for five hours. Sunglasses stay off indoors. The people who are actually buying are, almost without exception, the most quietly dressed in the room, and that is not an accident.

The register rises after seven. At Los Fuegos, where the cooking happens over open fire in the courtyard, a jacket without a tie is right and so is the assumption that you will smell faintly of woodsmoke afterwards. At The Surf Club Restaurant or L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon, dress as you would for a good dinner in Paris in December, adjusted for the humidity. Colour is welcome all week. Logos are not, and never have been, at this particular fair.

Where to eat during Art Basel Miami Beach week

The Michelin starred tables fill before the fair does, so book them when you book the aircraft. The Michelin Guide's starred list for Miami currently includes L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami at two stars, along with Le Jardinier Miami, Stubborn Seed, Ariete, Boia De, Cote Miami, The Surf Club Restaurant in Surfside and Shingo in Coral Gables. During Art Basel week these eight dining rooms carry most of the serious dinners in the city, which is precisely why the first week of November is already late to ask.

On the Beach, Stubborn Seed is the useful one: close enough to the Convention Center that a late Thursday booking survives a vernissage that overruns, and chef driven enough to justify the evening on its own. Further north, The Surf Club Restaurant sits inside a landmark beach club and remains the calmest grand room in Miami during the loudest week of its year. Inside the Faena, El Secreto Omakase handles the dinner for four that needs no explaining, while Los Fuegos handles the dinner for ten that does.

The evening smells faintly of woodsmoke.

On the mainland, the geography changes the evening. Boia De in Little Haiti is small, Italian in spirit and almost impossible in December, which is exactly its appeal for a late Saturday. Ariete in Coconut Grove draws the design and architecture crowd away from the Beach, and the drive back over the water at midnight is one of the better quiet moments of the week. Shingo in Coral Gables, a counter omakase, is the right choice for the night before the fair rather than the nights during it.

The Atljet Edit

Five choices from our desk for the week of December 4 to 7, each with the reason behind it.

  • Meridians, The Shape of Time, Miami Beach Convention Center: 19 monumental works that only read properly before the vernissage crowd or on Sunday morning.
  • Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann, Faena Hotel Miami Beach: open fire cooking in the courtyard, and the one table on the Beach that holds a group of ten without losing its nerve.
  • The Surf Club Restaurant, Surfside: a Michelin starred dining room inside a landmark beach club, and the calmest hour you will find all week.
  • Shingo, Coral Gables: a Michelin starred omakase counter, far enough from the fair to be the Wednesday night that sets up everything after it.
  • Boia De, Little Haiti: Michelin starred, very small, and the late Saturday reservation that tells people you know the city, not just the fair.

Arriving by air: which airport for a private jet to Art Basel Miami?

Miami International (MIA) is the primary gateway for a private jet to Art Basel Miami, with a General Aviation Center operated by Signature Flight Support that handles private flights 24 hours a day, every day of the year, confirmed on the official Miami International Airport site. It leaves you on the right side of the bay for both Miami Beach and the Design District. Miami Opa-locka Executive (OPF) is the dedicated business aviation field north of the city, and Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) is the quieter release valve roughly half an hour further north.

The constraint during fair week is not the runway, it is the parking space on the ramp. South Florida fields fill from the Tuesday, and by Thursday morning many aircraft are dropping passengers and repositioning elsewhere to wait, which is a cost that appears on the quote rather than in the schedule. Two practical consequences: name your arrival and departure times early, and accept that Sunday evening between five and nine is the most congested window of the entire Miami year. Monday morning departures are frequently cheaper and always calmer.

Atljet market data, October 2026. One way, per aircraft, estimate. Block time runs from the moment the aircraft moves to the moment it stops.

The numbers above are market estimates, not quotes, and they move with fuel, winds, airport fees, crew duty and the availability of a ramp on the day. A transatlantic arrival on the Wednesday and a departure on the Monday will price very differently from the same aircraft arriving Thursday midday and leaving Sunday night, which is the pattern half the fair chooses. If you want to see how a figure is actually built, we take it apart in the anatomy of a real charter quote and explain the weekend premium in why private jets cost more on a Friday.

For the shape of the trip itself, a straight point to point charter covers most Art Basel weeks, and from the East Coast a super midsize jet is the honest answer: cabin enough for four or six people and their coats, range enough to go home without a stop.

Airports

Arriving by air

Miami International (MIA) is the default arrival for Art Basel week, with its General Aviation Center open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the shortest run across to Miami Beach. Opa-locka and Fort Lauderdale Executive are the alternatives when the Miami ramps are full, which during the first week of December is most of the time. The Atljet flight desk can arrange the last stretch as well, whether that is a helicopter hop, a chauffeured car to Mid Beach or a motorboat across the bay to a private dock.

FXE
Fort Lauderdale Executive AirportQuieter and roughly half an hour further north, useful for late bookings and for Sunday departures that would otherwise sit in the Miami congestion.

By Sunday evening the Convention Center smells of nothing at all, the crates are going back the way they came, and somewhere in the Meridians hall a crew is coiling the same cable in the opposite direction. The gallerist in grey tailoring is already in a car to the airport, with the plinth exactly where it was always meant to be.
